Bates Family
Dear Valerie,
I am now scanning 2 letters from 1901.
They are addressed to Sopha Bates from WH Heckert, C.O. (Commanding Officer) 9th US Infantry on Army Department of the YMCA stationary, while stationed in Manila. Separation of Church and state? Not at this time.
What does W.H. name initials stand for?
All the Best,
Wayne

Wayne,
I do not remember ever seeing Sopha. I should look up what year she died. But I do remember being in that house because Olive was taking care of me there. I imagine Mother was teaching school someplace and needed her to baby sit me. Kevin was a baby then. I remember the back yard had a bleeding heart bush in the back. I think all of Grandpa's children spent a lot of time at Sopha's after Fanny died. One reason was, the school was close to her house and they attended there. Also, she could cook for them. And that house had a bathtub, which was a major convenience then. Another thing I noticed that I would like to know about is, that Grandpa's old house had only two beds. One downstairs and one upstairs. There was another bedroom upstairs, but no bed. And for all his life until they built that little house you have seen, Mack slept on a sopha in the living room of the old house.
